How can I increase my profiling range?
FollowThe range of your measurements are mainly govern by fixed parameters like the transducer frequency (you can read more about which factors that affect your range in this FAQ). There are however a few measures you can take when configuring your instrument that also can influence the range. As always, there are pros and cons with doing changes to your configuration. We recommend always to consult with the Deployment Planning window (for midlife instruments such as AWAC and Aquadopps) or the Effect tab in the Deployment Wizard (for Signatures) to see how your choices will affect the deployment. In the table below the possible measures you can take to increase the range and what consequences these measures may have for the deployment are listed.
Measure | Consequence |
Increase the Power Level | Higher power consumption and therefore shorter deployment |
Use a larger Cell Size | Lower spatial resolution |
In addition to being govern by the Power Level, the amount of energy the instrument sends out depends on the Cell Size. A small cell size will therefore lead to a relatively lower output power, which again can decrease the actual range of the measurements.
You can also read more about range in chapter 2.1.8.4 in The Comprehensive Manual - ADCP or in chapter 3.3. in Principles of Operation – Signature.
