Will starting the instrument in air harm the transducers?
Starting the instrument and pinging in air will not harm the instrument in any way. Actually, pinging in air is the way to decide the noise floor of the instrument (as described in the instrument manuals). We recommend to get a short period of measurements in air either at the beginning or the end of your deployment as reference for the data collected in water.
